NAACP Demands Answers Following Inmate’s Death
Okaloosa County, FL — The NAACP Okaloosa County Branch was contacted by the family of L’Twan Cedric Mitchell, an inmate found deceased on January 21, 2026, while in the custody of Okaloosa Correctional Institution (OCI). According to the family, they were informed of Mr. Mitchell’s condition the following day; however, they have reason to believe that the circumstances of his death may not align with the information provided. In response to their concerns and request for clarification, the NAACP has initiated a Legal Redress review to assist the family in understanding the events surrounding Mr. Mitchell’s passing.
“At this time, the NAACP is refraining from drawing conclusions regarding the cause of death,” said Sabu Williams, President of the Okaloosa County Branch, NAACP. “Nor are we making determinations about the actions of any individuals or agencies involved. Our role is to support the family, ensure their questions are addressed, and promote transparency as they seek further information. The Legal Redress Committee will collect available records, review relevant timelines, and communicate with appropriate authorities to assist the family in obtaining a comprehensive and accurate account of the incident.”
“The NAACP remains dedicated to fairness, due process, and the protection of civil and human rights for all individuals in custody.” Williams added, “We will continue to work alongside the family of Mr. Mitchell as they navigate this challenging period and pursue answers through proper channels.”
Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
