NAACP Responds to “Not Guilty” Verdict in the Trial of Former Deputy Eddie Duran

Crestview, FL — October 1, 2026 — The NAACP Okaloosa County Branch expresses deep disappointment and concern following today’s “not guilty” jury verdict in the criminal trial of former Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Eddie Duran, who fatally shot Airman Roger Fortson in his home on May 3, 2024.

The Branch maintains that the death of Airman Fortson was both tragic and avoidable, and that the circumstances surrounding the shooting demanded full accountability. While we respect the judicial process, we strongly disagree with the outcome delivered today. Our hearts remain with the Fortson family, whose pain has been prolonged by a verdict that many in our community will find difficult to accept. “This verdict is a painful reminder that justice remains uneven in our nation,” said Sabu Williams, President of the NAACP Okaloosa County Branch. “Airman Fortson was a young man serving his country, and he deserved to be safe in his own home. Today’s decision does not erase the tragedy of his death, nor does it reflect the value of the life that was taken. We stand with the Fortson family, and we stand with every resident who believes our community deserves better.”

The NAACP Okaloosa County Branch remains committed to pursuing transparency, accountability, and reform within local law enforcement practices. This moment strengthens our resolve to advocate for policies and training that protect all residents and prevent future tragedies.

At the same time, the Branch urges the community to respond with calm, discipline, and unity. Moments like this can stir deep frustration and anger, but we must not allow our disappointment to erupt into disorderly or unlawful behavior. “We are calling on our community to remain peaceful,” Williams added. “Our strength has always come from organized, principled, and nonviolent action. Let us honor Airman Fortson’s memory by channeling our emotions into constructive engagement, not chaos.”

The NAACP Okaloosa County Branch will continue to support the Fortson family and will announce upcoming community forums and advocacy initiatives in the days ahead.
