NAACP Seeking Recognition for Augustus “Gus” Tart

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shalimar, FL — The Okaloosa County Branch, NAACP is proud to announce its formal passing of a resolution calling for the establishment of a historical marker to honor the life and legacy of Augustus “Gus” Tart.

“Gus Tart was a significant figure in our local history, and the NAACP believes a permanent historical marker is a vital step to ensure his contributions and the history he represents are preserved for future generations.” said Sabu Williams, President of the local NAACP. “This resolution formally requests that the City of Shalimar, FL, officially recognize Mr. Tart’s impact on our community and on the City of Shalimar in particular.”

“The legacy of Augustus ‘Gus’ Tart is an integral part of our shared heritage,” said Diane Dillard, Chairperson of the NAACP Special Committee tasked with researching the life of Mr. Tart, “He owned 135 acres of land, all in what is now the Town of Shalimar, Florida.” “By erecting a historical marker we are not only honoring a man of great character but also ensuring the full story of our community’s history is told and remembered.”

The Okaloosa County Branch, NAACP invites community members, local leaders, and historians to support this effort as we work toward the marker’s formal dedication.
